Message from A Special DC Dragon Boat Festival Partner

Breast Cancer Survivor (BCS) Teams

The breast cancer survivor community has taken a special interest in Dragon Boat. It has become a dynamic sport for breast cancer survivors of all ages, as part of a healthy recovery lifestyle. Dragon boat paddling enables each woman to increase her strength at her own pace, while enjoying the bonds of friendship and support of other survivors.

Last year, the Hope Afloat breast cancer survivor team from Philadelphia had paddlers ranging from their mid-30s to their 70’s. We are nurses, teachers, engineers, retirees, accountants, small business owners, comptrollers, programmers, waitresses, florists, administrators, journalists, and managers, the Hope Afloat Team says of themselves. On the face of it, we are your ‘average’ women. Yet, average is not a word that we use to describe ourselves. We are strong and confident, motivated, dedicated and positively focused.

GoPinkDC, the newly organized breast cancer survivor team in metropolitan Washington, DC, is recruiting new members to join their Festival Team (www.gopinkdc.com). GoPinkDC has extended a special Festival invitation to other BCS teams and a number are expected to participate in the 2008 Festival. A special pink carnation ceremony will involve the BCS Teams and Festival spectators to remember and honor those with breast cancer.
